"Stump Giving Back"

Picture
Stump Giving Back
7"x9" Ink on Paper

In the “We Are Seeds” series, the stump is meant to represent the "metal" phase in life (the metal phase from 5 element chinese medicine theory which originated through daoism). It is a time of refining, clarity and blunt character. This is the phase of life we enter when we are in old age. The metal phase of life tends to be the time of our greatest wisdom, spiritual clarity and understanding the important aspects of life. This artwork in particular was meant to represent an EKG (Echocardiogram). The EKG is used in order to monitor the heart to see how it is functioning. The line created with the top outline of the stump is representative of the PQRS waves in an EKG. The very top of the stump resembles the "awakening" of someone before their steady decline and transition from their body into a completely spiritual state.

This was directly reflective of my experience with the passing of my father several months before I made this drawing. That experience allowed me to see death more as a new beginning of beauty allowing for complete freedom, peace and rest. Just as the stump grows frail and weak, it gives back to the earth so that it can be recycled and renewed in order to become new life once again. The end of the metal phase will then transition into new life, starting the cycle over and beginning in the water phase once again.

This artwork was created during a trip I took to Flagstaff, Arizona. I came across this stump when I was taking pictures of local Milk Thistle and thought the complexity of it would be great to draw. I used ink on paper in order to create this piece.
