"Pinecone"
Pinecone
7"x9" Ink on Paper
In the “We Are Seeds” series, the pinecone is meant to represent the "water" phase in life (the water phase from 5 element chinese medicine theory which originated through daoism). It is a time of birth, creating and new beginnings. The water element flows freely, can easily be molded into any container and can easily flow through even the smallest of areas. This is the time in life we are at our youngest (typically an infant). In the water phase we rely heavily on being taken care of by others until we can finally begin to grow in order to take care of ourselves. Although water may be soft and peaceful it can also be powerful and fierce if necessary.
While the pinecone may merely be a seed, it has the ability to grow into a strong, rooted and powerful tree that will eventually serve as a home for many birds and insects in the future.
This artwork was created during a trip I took to Flagstaff, Arizona. I came across this pinecone on the ground and thought it was so beautiful I had to draw it. I used ink on paper in order to create this piece.
