Gone Moosing, 49"x31" Charcoal on Wood This artwork is a statement to say the least. I have grown up in awe of moose my whole life. I grew up in Massachusetts and would always vacation with my family in Maine primarily around Carrabassett Valley. Some of my greatest memories took place there and one in particular. My family would always go "Moosing." Basically, we would go out in the evening to the best spots to look for Moose! Seems pretty simple, but as a little kid, this was one of the coolest things for me because these creatures are massive! I remember going back to school and most of my friends had never even seen a moose before. Many of my friends today still have never seen one.
My father's family was originally from Maine and so he knew how to navigate the area quite well. I made this artwork with him in mind because the moose was an animal we seemed to bond over. Since Maine was the place my family would always go on vacation, I grew quite fond of those simple moments. After my Dad's passing about a year ago, I wanted to make an artwork that I knew would resonate with him. He always dreamed of a giant moose artwork on his wall and so that is exactly what I did here. We were very close, so now whenever I see a moose, I always think of him and his wide eyed excitement when we would see one in the wild.
This artwork was created utilizing wood which I gessoed and sanded down to make the canvas. I kept the canvas rather gritty to still bring out the wooden imperfections, as I knew these would show up nicely in contrast with the charcoal. I also created a pine frame for this artwork which I colored using a propane torch.
You can watch the process of making this artwork in the video "Gone Moosing."
