"Elk Bust"

Picture
Elk Bust, 16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas, August 2021

Elk bust was one of the first wildlife paintings that I ever created. I was inspired by my work with charcoal and wanted to see what I could create using black and white paint. Something I particularly appreciated utilizing the paint was the fact I was more easily able to fluctuate between the positive and negative space creating greater contrast in the artwork.

Elk will forever make me think of my home in Arizona. As someone who has been an avid lover of deer and moose, as I am originally from the northeast, elk remind me of my transformation as I moved away, These animals have a long heritage in the west and I always dreamed of seeing them up close one day. The very first time I saw an elk was at the Grand Canyon and I have been hooked ever since. When I think of this beautiful animal I am reminded how as people we can be strong and powerful but peaceful at the same time. Like any large animal we must respect our boundaries and the boundaries of others, that is how we begin to live in harmony with one another as we travel through our journey.

You can watch the process of making this artwork in the video "Elk Bust."
